It is believed that Charles and Judith came to Canada with Charles' brother Jean and his wife Marie.

Charles received a grant of 60 arpents of land on the Saint-Michel shore from Father Jerome Lalemont, the Jesuit Superior.

Charles added 50 more arpents to his orginal grant. He would build a house "in wood, room by room", which measured 44 by 20 feet. It was lathed inside, had a fireplace, double foyer, single roof and was covered in clapboard on the outside.
