Obituary 3 Jun 2012 Troy, Oakland, Michigan, United States - Madeline Gertrude (Quinlan) Kaucheck entered eternal life Sunday, June 3, 2012.
Madeline was born in Maidstone, Ontario, Canada to Joseph and Gertrude (Casey) Quinlan on October 10, 1916. She was the only surviving daughter with three brothers: Edwin, Franklin and Louis. Both Edwin and Louis preceded her in death. Her mother Gertrude (nee Casey) Quinlan entered eternal life in 1925 after giving birth to Madeline's youngest brother Louis.
After his mother's death, Louis was adopted by the McQuire's (his cousins) in Maidstone, Canada. Upon entering adulthood, Louis became a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force when Canada entered WW II with England. Fearing that he might be shot down while flying missions over Germany he legally changed his name to McQuire so that his adopted mother would receive his death benefits if he did not return from the war.
Louis's older siblings: Madeline, Edwin and Franklin were placed in St Joseph Orphanage in London, Ontario in the care of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Five years later, their father, Joseph, died of cancer. At the age of 14 Madeline was an orphan.
Cousins living in Highland Park, Michigan invited Madeline to live with them. Madeline completed high school at Highland Park High and graduated at the top of her class. She met her future husband, Jacob (Jack) Kaucheck, at the church picnic at St. John Vianney. He approached her and asked her to dance. She told him she had a headache. He went to get her water and aspirins. When he returned she was on the dance floor with another fellow. Her future husband, Jack, never gave up. Two years later they were married at St. John Vianney Church in Highland Park.
One year into their marriage they moved to their first new home on Five Points in Redford Township. Lawrence Joseph Kaucheck, their first child, had just been born. Shortly after moving in they were forced to sell that home and move back to the Kaucheck home in Highland Park in an effort to keep it from foreclosure. These were the war years and all efforts were made to help the family.
With the end of the war in 1946 Madeline, Jack, Larry and their new-born son Kenneth Robert Kaucheck, moved into their new home on Strasburg in Detroit. They lived there until Kenneth was 10, moving to Grosse Pointe. Madeline wanted to be near her cousins who had invited her to come to the US from Canada when she was 14, and to have their two sons attend Catholic school full time.
Madeline devoted her life to her family. She was both a devoted wife and a strong mother. Until her sons were raised she never felt the need to work outside of her home. Her life was her family.
When both her sons were raised: Larry getting married and Ken off to University, Madeline decided to re-enter the work force. She sought employment at Hudson's at their downtown Detroit store. It was her favorite store. She worked there on a contingent basis for over fifteen years eventually becoming a general receptionist in the executive suite.
Upon retirement she and her husband became snow birds spending the fall and winter months in Sarasota, Florida and spring and summer in Michigan. During this period of her life she entertained a great deal; became very active in her church community in Sarasota; played in numerous bridge leagues; took a great many sewing classes routinely creating clothes for herself and her friends.
Upon the death of her husband Jack in 1998 she sold their home in Florida and their home in Michigan and moved in with her son Ken. She lived with him until 2005 moving then to a senior citizen assisted living center. After a year and half in Hospice care Madeline passed into eternal life June 3, 2012.
She leaves behind her older son Larry, his wife Ann and daughter Kendra (William Goodrich); her younger son, Reverend Ken; her brother Franklin, his wife Ann; brother-in-law John Kaucheck; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be dearly missed and remembered by all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 - 10:00 AM - at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon (at Woodland), Birmingham, MI. Anyone may attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gianna House (Attn: Sister Diane Masson, CSSF) St. Mary's Convent, 36475 Five Mile Rd. Livonia, MI 48154.
