John E. Haase, age 60, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2003 after a fierce battle with cancer. He was affectionately known as "Hat Man Haase" to many of his co-workers, clients, and friends. He was born on April 13, 1943 in Menasha; son of Randolph and Eileen (Kenny) Haase. On August 23, 1969, he was united in marriage to Mary Butterfield at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Menasha. John served his county with the U.S. Navy from 1961-1965. John worked for the state of Wisconsin in Winnebago County as a Probation and Parole Officer for 30 years touching many lives and giving guidance to many people. He also tirelessly volunteered his time and compassion for the Sexual Offenders Support Group (S.O.S.). In recognition of his excellence, integrity, and endless contributions of care and time he had received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault. John had a tremendous love for nature and being in the great outdoors, often canoeing with his friend Tom and his loyal sidekick, grandson Isaac. He loved to take long walks with Ralph on the Larsen trail near their home. He had a devotion to learning new things and constantly had a book close to hand. John will be sorely missed by his family, his wife, Mary E. Haase, his daughter, Catherine E. Haase, his son Shawn R. Haase, his beloved grandson, Isaac L. Haase, his mother, Eileen Haase, his sister, Linda (Mike) Monte, his brother, David Haase, his brother, Daniel (Kathy) Haase, his sister, Jean (Steve) Karls and his brother, Mark (Melody) Haase. Many nieces, nephews and close friends will miss his humor and stories. John was preceded in death by his father, Randolph Haase and his uncle Ken Newburg. A memorial service for John will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2003 at 4 p.m., with Melody Haase officiating at Westgor Funeral Home, Menasha. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established in John's name.
