Mrs. Gauthier Of Bark River Dies

Mrs. John Gauthier, 76, widely known resident of Bark River, died at 10:45 p.m., Wednesday at St. Francis Hospital. She had been ill the past four years.
She was born Laura E. Nadeau, in the village of Nadeau, July 25, 1881, and her marriage took place there Jan. 16, 1906. The family lived in Ford River before moving to Bark River in 1923.
Mrs. Gauthier was a member of St. George's Chruch and the Rosary Society. She also was a member of Trinity Circle 362, Daughters of Isabella.
Surviving are her husband; three sons, Harvey of Pontiac, Robert of Detroit and David of Bark River; four daughters, Mrs. George (Audrey) Bayer of Nome, Alaska, Mildred of Bark River, Mrs. Russell (Ruth) LaMotte of Birmingham, Mich., and Mrs. Donald (Theresa) Peters of Kaneohe, Hawaii; 14 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Alec Rouse of Iron Mountain.
The body was taken to the Boyle Funeral Home in Bark River. Arrangements for the services are incomplete.

Funeral services for Mrs. John J. Gauthier, widely known Bark River resident who died Wednesday night, will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. George's Church in Bark River with the Rev. J. J. Dunleavy officiating. Burial will be in Bark River Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Boyle Funeral Home in Bark River after 7 p.m., Saturday. Daughters of Isabella of Trinity Circle will meet at the funeral home to recite the rosary Sunday at 4 p.m., and the parish rosary will be recited that evening at 8.
Mrs. Gauthier's daughters, Mrs. George Bayer of Nome, Alaska and Mrs. Donald Peters of Kanceohe, Hawaii, are arriving here Sunday.

Two Escanaba Men Leaving on Big Adventure

Roads to research and adventure are opening up for two Escanaba men, James E. (Bud) Pryal and J. Harvey Gauthier who are starting this week for the interior of northern Alaska where they will be employed by the U.S. department of interior, on a geological survey.
Pryal, whos home is at 1312 First avenue north, and Gauthier, a resident of Bark River, will leave Escanaba, Friday morning for Seattle, Washington, at which point they will embark for Sitka, Alaska, sailing May 5 on the S.S. Laconia of the Alaskan Line. There they will entrain for the northernmost point of the Alaskan railway and continue by packtrain, penetrating to the wilderness and mountain country of this vas territory.
?b?Will Write Stores?/b?
While in Alaska, the two local residents also plan to investigate certain gold interests which they have in that country. They expect to remain in Alaska until the early part of November, and should the gold claims prove lucrative they intend to take up residence in Alaska.
Mr. Pryal promises that the book world may look forward to a number of short stories dealing with his experiences in the far north. The two also intend to sell pictures of the trip to finance an expedition into Manchurin, where Mr. Gauthier is interested in the living conditions of the natives.
The government survey with which Pryal and Gauthier will be connected is regarded as the most significant effort yet made to determine the mineral values of Alaska.

Commencement exercises were held last Thursday at Blumenthal auditorium. Bark River - Mrs. George A. Bayer, the former Audrey Gauthier of Bark River, who is a nurse in the Alaska Native Clinic Service, is visiting here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Gauthier, before returning to Nome.
Mrs. Bayer and her husband, chief deputy U. S. Marshal at Nome, made the trip to the states by plane to take a native Eskimo patient to St. Elizabeth's hospital in Washington, D.C. After leaving Washington they visited relatives in New York and Detroit. Mr. Bayer went on to Walla Walla, Wash., to spend some time with his people and Mrs. Bayer came to Bark River. She plans to leave for Nome June 1.
Temperatures at Nome, Mrs. Bayer said, are well below zero, and the snow is just beginning to disappear.

Area Families Fear For Loved Ones In Alaska

Anxiety was expressed today by members of many families in this area for the safety of relatives and loved ones in Alaska, where violent earthquakes brought widespread destruction centering in Anchorage.
The earth shocks came at about 5:30 last night in Alaska or about 10:30 p.m. Escanaba time.
Among the former residents of this area known to be in Alaska is the former Audrey Gauthier, a registered nurse, now Mrs. George Bayer and the mother of two children.
The family lives in Anchorage and Mrs. Bayer's brother, David Gauthier of 428 S. 8th St., said he last heard from her about a month ago. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gauthier of Bark River.

Mildred Gauthier dies Thursday
Miss Mildred Gauthier, 49, of 428 S. 8th St., member f a widely known Bark River family, died at 10 p.m. Thursday at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. where she had been a medical patient the past two weeks. She had been ill for one year.
She was born in Bark River Sept. 3, 1910, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John G. Gauthier, who died in 1958, and she had spent her life in Bark River. She had live in Escanaba since July.
She was a graduate of Escanaba High School, Clas of 1928.
Surviving are three brothers and three sisters, Harvey and Robert of Detroit. David, Escanaba, Mrs. George (Audrey) Boyer, Nome, Alaska, Mrs. Russell (Ruth) LaMotte, Detroit, and Mrs. Donald (Theresa) Peters, North Hollywood, Calif.
The body will be taken to the Boyle Funeral Home in Bark River. Tentative arrangements are for services Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. George's Church, Bark River, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. J. Dunleavy officiating.

Joseph Breault, performed the ceremony and was celebrant of the nuptial mass, upon the occasion of the twenty-second anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. The music of the mass was sung by St. George's church choir. Mrs. Edwin Bergman was organist and director, while Miss Belle Bodette sang the Ave Maria at the offertory. The Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin was played as the processional and Mendelssohn's Wedding March as the recessional. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a white satin fitted bridal gown, fitted with lace insets and a Peter Pan collar and long fitted sleeves. She wore a shoulder length veil and carried an arm bouquet of pink bud roses and fever few. Miss Jean LaMotte, sister of the bridegroom, attended her as maid of honor in a gown of aqua moire and a shoulder length veil of peach net. She carried a bouquet of roses and snapdragons. Mr. LaMotte was attended by Laurence Gauthier, brother of the bride. Mrs. Gauthier wore blue figured crepe with white accessories, while Mrs. LaMotte wore rose biege crepe with white accessories. The bride is a graduate of Escanaba high school and Michigan State college. She was a member of Zeta Tan Alpha sorority and was an instructor the past two years in the primary grades of the Schaffer school. Mr. LaMotte is a graduate of Lake Linden high school and is now with the Murray Body Corporation of Detroit. A wedding breakfast for the bridal party was served at the home of the bride for twelve guests. Dinner was served at one o'clock at St, George's church auditorium for fifty-two guests. A color scheme of pink and white was carried out in the table decorations. Mr. LaMotte and his bride left Immediately following the dinner for Detroit, where the bridegroom is employed and where the young couple will make their home. Robert Gauthier
Robert Gauthier, 56 of Detroit, a former Bark River resident, died early in Detroit following a short illness.
He was born April 5, 1916 in Ford River and he had resided in Detroit for the past 25 years where he was employed as a bookkeeper. Mr. Gauthier was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, Escanaba and Cloverland Commerical College. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Detroit.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) LaMotte of Birmingham, Mrs. George (Audrey) Bayer of Port Orchard, Wash., and Mrs. Donald (Theresa) Peters of Porteville, Calif.; two brothers, Harvery of Bloomfield Hills and David of Detroit.
Friends may call at the Boyle Funeral Chapel from 4 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and furneral services are tentatively set for Saturday.

Manager of the chemical and metallurgical engineering department of the Ford Motor Company's Livonia transmission plant, Laurence Gauthier, 38, of 9611 Melrose, Livonia, died Friday night. A graduate of the Michigan Institute of Technology at Houghton, Mr. Gauthier was first employed by the Packard Motor Car Co. He was a membe of the American Society for Metals and the Knights of Columbus. Funeral mass will be at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Church, 11311 Hubbard, Livonia, followed by burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Laurence W. Gauthier, 38, a Department Manager at this location since October 1953, died on February 1. He had been hospitalized for most of the period since last August with a malignant condition.
A Metallurgical engineering graduate from Michigan College of Mining and Technology, Mr. Gauthier joined Ford in March, 1950, after 10 years in the metallurgical engineering with the Packard Motor Car Co. Starting as a Chemical Engineer at our Division's Fairfax Plant, he moved to the position of Department Manager in three and a half years.
He was promoted to Section Supervisor's status in the Fairfax Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Department in April, 1953, and came to our Plant as Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Manager in October of that year. He became Manager of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering with Division in September, 1955, but reverted back to the Plant level with the realignment of Division Staff activities last June.
On medical leave since August, Mr. Gauthier had returned to the job for a short time in November.Laurence married Alyce Mable McCoy on 26 Jun 1943 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States. GAUTHIER, DAVID H.
David H. Gauthier, 57, of Detroit, a former Bark River resident, died Thursday morning in Detroit Osteopathic Hospital.
Born June 24, 1922, in Ford River, he moved to the Bark River area as a young child. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School, Escanaba, had attended Michigan State University and was employed as a clerk in his father's grocery store in Bark River. He moved to Detroit in 1970.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. George (Audrey) Vayer, of Port Orchard, Wash., Mrs. Russell (Ruth) LaMotte, of Birmingham, Mich., Mrs. Donald (Theresa) Peters of Garden Grove, Calif.; one brother, Harvey Gauthier, of Irvine, Calif.
Friend may call at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River after 4 p.m. (EST) Sunday.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. George's Catholic Church, Bark River, with Rev. Matt Myman officiating. Burial will be in the Bark River Cemetery.
